UK Gambling Law | Licences and GAMSTOP

An overview of UKGC licensing, remote casinos and the national self-exclusion scheme.

Offering online gambling in Great Britain

The UK Gambling Commission requires businesses providing remote gambling to consumers in Great Britain to hold the relevant UK licence, even when the business itself is based overseas. An overseas licence alone does not replace this requirement.

GAMSTOP participation

All online gambling businesses licensed in Great Britain must participate in GAMSTOP. A casino described as “not on GAMSTOP” is therefore not a conventional GB-licensed casino category.

Bonus rules introduced in 2026

For UKGC licensees, changes effective 19 January 2026 limit wagering requirements on bonus funds to 10 times and restrict mixed-product incentives. These rules should not be assumed to apply to every foreign operator.
